• Grasslands management activities that can be used to sequester carbon in soils include grazing management, protected grasslands and set-asides, grassland productivity improvements, and fire management (see Box 15).

• The Habitats Directive commits EU countries to protecting plants and animals, and their habitats, and to setting aside areas to form part of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas.

• Sea-level rise and climate changes, combined with other environmental stresses, already have destroyed unique cultural and spiritual sites, traditional heritage assets, and important coastal protected areas in many Pacific island states.
